Meet Best-Selling Author Mary Alice Monroe

Mary Alice Monroe is a master storyteller, and her latest book, Last Light over Carolina, is a prime example. Southeastern Charm publisher Kristy Ensor said, “This was by far my favorite read of the summer! The book is filled with underlying themes of love, forgiveness and commitment, and it’s a real page turner. This was the first book by Monroe that I have ever read, and I’m an instant fan! She so vividly describes her characters and the scenery. You just feel like you’re right there in the story, and I was drawn in from the first page to the very last.”

Ensor recently chatted with the best-selling author and found her to be very warm and engaging. During their conversation Mary Alice admitted that she is a natural-born storyteller. “I was the 3rd eldest of ten children, and I was always telling stories to my siblings. I wrote my first story when I was eight years old,” said Monroe. In fact it was her 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Crawford who was the first mentor to really inspire her to write. Impressed with the stories Mary Alice had written, Mrs. Crawford asked Monroe if she had ever thought about being a writer when she grew up. At the time, Monroe said she didn’t even know you could write as a profession. Once she learned that, she was convinced that this is what she wanted to do. But it wasn’t until many years later that Monroe would actually make her dream reality. She found herself bedridden during one of her pregnancies. Knowing that she had always wanted to write a book, her husband gave Monroe a notebook and basically told her to write the novel that was lingering inside of her. She began writing, and actually wrote her first book during that time. So basically she birthed a book and a baby simultaneously.

When Ensor asked her how she developed such realistic characters, the author responded with “I’m very intuitive, and studying people is really organic to my research.” She definitely does her research. She’s very hands-on and usually spends at least a year researching each of her projects. For instance, prior to writing her new release, she spent time out in out in the shrimping community in the low-country of South Carolina. She went out and interviewed shrimpers, their wives and actually spent time out on the shrimp boats doing hands-on work. Additionally, she draws from personal experiences to capture such heartfelt emotions & feelings which is evidenced through her characters.

Monroe is in the midst of her book tour for Last Light over Carolina, and she’s also busy working on her next writing project called – The Butterfly’s Daughter due out next July. That book’s sure to be another great read! Be sure to check out the feature article about Monroe in the summer 2010 issue of Southeastern Charm. Introducing BrokeDown Cadillac

Southeastern Charm’s publisher, Kristy Ensor, recently had a chance to catch up with the delightful and talented duo - Corri English and Randy Dunham of the modern country group BrokeDown Cadillac. The two have made their way from L.A. to Music City where they’ll continue pursuing their music career. English, a Georgia native, is also an actress who has lived in L.A., and she says - “Nashville is the best of both worlds coming from L.A. and Atlanta. There’s lots of southern hospitality plus it’s a very artistic town. I love being here.” Dunham, who was born and raised in California, also speaks highly of his new hometown. “People are nice and friendly. There’s openness in the south with dignity and graciousness.”

BrokeDown Cadillac had an exciting opportunity to be a part of the Disney movie Race to Witch Mountain starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. It was the movie’s director, Andy Fickman, who was especially instrumental in getting them in the film. This movie was a perfect launching pad for the band to take off. They can be seen performing in a honky-tonk bar in the film. Plus five of their songs can be heard throughout the movie. Two of their songs – “Southern Nights” and “Boogie Woogie Saturday Night” are available on the digital soundtrack from Walt Disney Records.

The fabulous five-piece band has also released its debut album “Somewhere in America.” It’s difficult to believe that the petite Corri English can belt out such strong and pure vocals. “I am really impressed with this band, and I just know they have a bright future,” says Ensor. “Being a big-time country music fan, I’m convinced that BrokeDown Cadillac will soon be topping the charts!”

Be sure to read the feature article about BrokeDown Cadillac in the premier issue of Southeastern Charm launching March 1, 2010. In the meantime, to find out more about this up and coming band, please visit their website – www.brokedowncadillac.net.

If you’re looking for a great place to enjoy some much needed R & R, there’s a wonderful place nestled by a quiet stretch of the Toccoa River in beautiful North Georgia called River Dwelling. We just enjoyed a very relaxing media trip at this modern mountain retreat. It was so refreshing to unwind and get back to nature.

The Aska Trails are just a short jaunt, and there are plenty of activities for the adventurous spirits including kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, biking and more. Or, you may simply prefer just to relax at this contemporary vacation rental where you can nap on the screened-in sleep porch while listening to the wind rustle through the pines, read a book on the riverside hammock or soak in the hot tub beneath the open sky.

The town of Blue Ridge is also nearby where you can take a stroll along Main Street to do some shopping in the charming boutiques. And, you may want to dine at the highly recommended Serenity Garden Café.

2009 CMT MUSIC AWARDS

Southeastern Charm was honored to be invited to this year's CMT Music Awards held on July 16th at the Sommet Center in downtown Nashville. In case you missed the big event, here’s a brief recap. Looking simply stunning in a coral dress, CMT’s own Insider host, Katie Cook, interviewed celebrities on the red carpet which was chock full of star power. Not only was it a big night for the seasoned musicians, it was also an exciting night for newcomers like the up and coming duo Joey + Rory. They graced the red carpet and later took stage to perform their chart climbing hit – Cheater, Cheater.

Hosted by comedian Bill Engvall, the evening was filled with the greatest live entertainment. There were many awards presented throughout the show, but it was Brad Paisley who proved to be the night’s biggest winner…taking away three awards. Perhaps one of the best surprises was when the B52s came on stage with Sugarland to sing – Love Shack. They rocked the house! Taylor Swift(pictured above) and Def Leppard also joined forces closing the show with - Pour Some Sugar On Me…another spectacular performance!

However, it was Trace Adkins(pictured above)with his powerful voice that sent chills up our spines and brought tears to our eyes when he sang his hit song – You’re Gonna Miss This.

It was definitely a wonderful night of celebration for the country music genre. Southeastern Charm wishes to congratulate all of this year’s nominees and the winners listed below!
